Co. A, Eighth Kansas Volunteer Infantry is a Civil War re-enactment primarily based in the south-central Kansas. The Eighth is a charter member of the original Frontier Battalion and now the Frontier Brigade (3rd BDE, 1st Federal Div). At present, the Eighth has 46 soldiers, 6 musicians and 25 civilians actively on our rolls from across the state.
Our objective is to work within the structure of the Frontier Brigade and to support our brother units on the field. The company is organized according to period military regulations. We meet monthly for drill, conducting our business during that time. An annual dinner & dance is held each January to discuss and plan events for the upcoming year. Drill and communication are imperative to the survival of any unit, and these are the aspects that will give us the best impression possible. We also strongly believe in supporting and maintaining a good relationship with our fellow Confederate reenactors.
Our goal is to promote history and have fun. The Eighth is composed of people from all walks of life. We reenact to remember the men that fell in the defense of our country. These men came from all over this great nation ensuring our freedom with their blood. We will never forget their sacrifice.
If you are interested in portraying a civilian or medical staff we can direct you to the United States Sanitary Commission (USSC) & Frontier Brigade Hospital Corps commanded by Maj. Herschel Stroud. The Major and his outstanding staff always take care of the Eighth and the Frontier Brigade while in the field.
Our unit is glad to speak at public gatherings and on the average we speak at 10-15 schools a year in the Wichita area. Two members of the Eighth are history professors and many of our members have an abundant knowledge to share with the public. Whatever your interest, military, civilian, or medical we can give you the information needed to start your experience reenacting the most defining moment in our nation's history. Join the Eighth Kansas and join us in proudly defending the Union! At present, 8th Kansas annual dues are $10.00. Checks can be made payable to: Tom Schmidt 404 N. Walnut Peabody, KS 66866
